FAQ

Is caffeine bad for your eyes?
Caffeine can be a direct contributor to dry eyes and eye(lid) twitching.  A recent study found that caffeine can increase eye pressure on those with glaucoma or high eye pressures but had little or no effect on those with “normal” pressures.  Limiting or removing caffeine may help if any of the above are an issue.

History

The Mather Vision Group has been a part of the Lafayette-West Lafayette community since Dr. Joel A. Peterson first opened his ophthalmology practice in November of 1946. He provided eye care to the community in a caring and compassionate manner, starting a tradition of quality care and personal service.

A few years later, in 1955, Dr. Robert L. Mather assumed the ophthalmology practice of Dr. Milton Erdel in Frankfort, Indiana. Like Dr. Peterson, he believed in treating the total patient according to his individual needs. Soon he opened a second office in Lafayette, Indiana, providing the same caring attention to patients in the Lafayette and West Lafayette communities.

In June of 1959, Robert Mather was requested to assume Dr. Peterson's practice, continuing to provide the same personalized, caring service begun by Dr. Peterson. He consolidated his Frankfort and Lafayette practices to one office in Lafayette. By 1981, Robert's nephew, Steven, began his optometric practice on the south side of Lafayette and by 1986, Drs. Robert and Steven were located in the same building. In 1993, when Robert retired, Dr. Steven C. Mather continued his work, bringing his knowledge, enthusiasm, and expertise to the business begun nearly a half century before.

Now named Mather Vision Group, Dr. Steven Mather's work in the Lafayette-West Lafayette community continues the tradition of putting the patient first while providing the latest technology and expertise in total patient eye care.
Today, Dr. Mather has a staff of many competent professionals, from opticians to insurance specialists, to ensure that a wide range of quality eye care services are available to his patients.

Mission

Our mission is to provide the best eye care available in a personal and caring setting in the context of the patient's total health. What does this mean to you?

It means that we provide second-to-none eye care with the most technologically advanced techniques and equipment. We keep informed and educated about the latest developments in eye care and integrate those into our practice so that you have available to you the best our field has to offer. If we ourselves do not provide a service, we will refer you to a qualified specialist who will care for your vision with the same compassion and competence as our own practice.

It means that we never look at you as just another patient to be hurried through the process. We understand that your vision is important to you, and we take the time to get to know you and to understand your concerns and questions about your eyesight. We learn about your lifestyle and on-the-job requirements, and work with you to help find the right solutions to your vision problems and long-term vision health.

It means that we look at your eyes as part of you as a whole. We learn about your general health, the environments in which you live and work, and the stresses you face day to day. We help you understand how these factors influence your eyesight and could cause potential problems. When you leave our office, you will have a better understanding of your eyes and how to keep them healthy.

At the Mather Vision Group your visual health is our main concern.
